Welcome to Art 583 Advanced Studio Art Projects

Dear Students,

A warm and hearty welcome to the class blog for Art 583 Advanced Studio Projects, which provides direct access to important class documents. Each student is asked to develop an individual blog that will be linked to our class blog so we can easily share information. Directions for setting up your blog can be found in the links to the right.

As most of you know from our meeting during preregistration last Spring, Art 583 serves a variety of needs for enrolled students. Many of you are studio art minors and are taking the class because it is the required capstone for this minor. Others among you are studio art or art/tech majors who are taking the class to complete a media sequence, or because you are seeking an additional advanced studio art experience prior to enrolling in your senior project. If you are a junior major or minor, please keep in mind that the department recommends that you do not take this class until you have completed your media sequence.

Below is a list of basic ideas we will be exploring this semester as you develop a body of work for exhibition, which is one of our primary goals. Everything we undertake will therefore be done to support that goal.

  • Finding Ideas
  • How to start working
  • Setting up a studio/work environment that nurtures and supports your practice
  • Finding your artistic lineage
  • Engaging Process: Marrying Idea, Form and Content
  • Working-Making-Reflecting - building an effective artistic practice
  • Describing your Ideas: allowing the verbal to help you get to the visual
  • Describing your work and your concepts
  • Learning to critique your own work and the work of others

I have created two Pinterest boards for you to peruse up front. One shares images of Artist's Studios and another shares images of Artist's Sketchbooks. Both are relevant to our initial work since each of you will need to create a space in which you can work and push your ideas forward, and you are also expected to use the sketchbook (traditional hand drawn and digital sketchbook via the blog) to help visualize and develop your ideas.

One of your first assignments will be to create your blog and develop a presentation that introduces us to your work and your primary interests. Details can be found in the blog links to the right of this post.

I'm looking forward to our semester together. Seminar is one of my all-time favorite classes to teach and I can tell from our meetings last spring that you will be a wonderful group to work with!

Enjoy the rest of your summer and feel free to email if you have questions!
